SEASON OPENER TIMBER LAKE @ TIOSPAYE TOPA

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL REG8B

The KIPI Sports Team was in LaPlant, SD yesterday for the Tiospaye Topa Lady Thunder Hawks season opener. The Lady Thunder Hawks hosted the Timber Lake Lady Panthers in a South Dakota High School Region 8B matchup.

Lady Panther Head Coach Erin Gimbel begins the 2023-2024 Girls Basketball season with a coaching record of 49-37. Right from the tip the Lady Panthers had a huge advantage with only five opponents playing for Tiospaye Topa. Jr. shooting guard Jasmine Nash was a rebounding presence, but through the first quarter the Lady Thunder Hawks matched every bucket made by Timber Lake. At the end of the 1st quarter the score was 10-11 Timber Lake. From that point on the Lady Panthers had full control of the game led by 5’10 Senior Forward Kendyl Locken. Locken put her scoring ability on full display in the first half as she stepped right passed the defense multiple times and earned the KIPI Radio “Player of the Game” award with 16 points and sealing the win putting the Lady Panthers at 1-0.

The final score of the game was 66-38, but the KIPI Sports team was very impressed with the efforts of the Lady Thunder Hawks as they played the entire game with 5 players led by 6’1 Junior Forward Lei’lani Bowker. Lei’lani had a game high of 25 pts. 14 reb. And 8 blocks. Bowker was big on both sides of the ball for Tiospaye Topa, and this young lady deserves some recognition.
