KIPI Sports Presentation of 2023-2024 CRST High School Basketball

DJ Absolute left KIPI Studios on Tuesday December 12 to the Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Absolute has called 5 High School Basketball games, and 6 High School Football Games, for a total of 11 total games going into the 46th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational. This year’s holiday showcase featured 4 of the 5 CRST High Schools that are covered by KIPI Sports- Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, Dupree, Tiospaye Topa and Takini. (8 total teams) Timber Lake is the only CRST High School not attending Lakota Nation. 

Joining Absolute, 1988 2nd Team ALL-STATE Selection Rob Mendoza (C-EB) Rob is now the AD for the Little Wound Mustangs. Rob knows CRST High School Hoops and has great knowledge of the game both on and off the court. Rob is former Head Coach of both the Little Wound Mustangs and the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves.

C-EB FRESHMAN LEVI BIG EAGLE -COMPETED IN LNI CHESS TOURNAMENT

CRST BASKETBALL TEAMS, COACHES, AND FANS

The Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves are the only Cheyenne River School to win the tournament, LNI Titles in 1987, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2010, 2011. 3 Boys Championships and 3 Girls Championships. Ohitika coaches -Arlyn Wohlleber, Les Logg, Jesse Mendoza, and Terry Nelson. 

This year’s tournament will be the second year for the Dupree Basketball Program, and both Tiospaye Topa and Takini have both attended since beginning of each of their respected programs, Takini in the early 90’s and Tiospaye Topa 1997. 

The Lakota Nation Invitational scoring record holder and CRST Tribal Member Kristrapher Meeter broke the Great Louie Krogman’s Most Tournament Points Record of 134 last year in 2022 at the 45th Annual Tournament. (54 -Most Pts in Game, and 145-Most Pts in Tournament) (White River-Louie Krogman, SD All-Time High School Basketball Scoring Leader-3651 points)

Meeter led the Tiospaye Topa Thunder Hawks to a 5th place Dakota Oyate Challenge victory with a deep 3 pt game winner at the buzzer over Wakpala. Weeks into the new year Meeter broke 1000 pts and led his Thunder Hawks to a post-season win over Timber Lake and came up short to qualify for the SoDak 16 in a thriller loss to Faith. Kris comes from a basketball family and is a product of Eagle Butte’s famous Indian Courts. The Indian Courts is located in the heart of Eagle Butte. The court is concrete, full of gritty tough games and has NBA distance 3 pt lines.  Last February Kris and the Thunder Hawks were on the road against a loud and tough Dupree Team. The Defense was all over Kris from the tip, but Kris had 52 and a victory over the Tigers. His little sister Pamela dropped 20 that night for the Lady Thunder Hawks and both receiving KIPI Radio Player of the Game honors. Kris’ Junior year he is playing for the Marty Braves. The Braves have 4 high caliber scorers this season. Meeter had 18pt. 10reb, 4ast, 1stl and a block in Saturday’s 5th place game against the Little Wound Mustangs.
