Alaska Natives are celebrating Democrat Mary Peltola’s historic win in Alaska’s U.S. House special election. Peltola will become the first Alaska Native elected to Congress and the first woman to hold Alaska’s only House seat. She is set to serve the remainder of the late Republican Rep. Don Young’s term, which ends in January. But even as Peltola celebrated her victory Wednesday in the ranked-choice special election, she was looking toward November. She and Republicans Sarah Palin and Nick Begich, who also competed in the special election, are running in the November general election that will decide who wins a two-year term.

Canadian police hunted for the remaining suspect in the stabbing deaths of 10 people in an Indigenous community and nearby town in the province of Saskatchewan after finding the body of his brother amid a massive manhunt for the pair. Damien Sanderson, 31, was found dead Monday near the stabbing sites and authorities believe his brother and fellow suspect, Myles Sanderson, 30, is injured, on the run and likely in the provincial capital of Regina, said police chief Evan Bray. The series of stabbings also wounded 18 people.

The smokey conditions in the Black Hills are caused by the jet stream carrying smoke from fires further west. Wildfires are burning in parts of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California, and other western states. Monday, the fire danger in the Black Hills was high.
