Kevin Locke, acclaimed Native American flute player, hoop dancer, recording artist, cultural ambassador and educator, has died in South Dakota at age 68. A member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Locke died Friday night after returning to his hotel room in Hill City, his son Ohiyesá Locke said Monday. The younger Locke said his father, who had been performing at the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills, suffered a fatal asthma attack at his hotel. According to his website, Locke performed for nearly 40 years to hundreds of thousands of people in more than 90 countries at performing art centers, schools, universities, state and national parks, monuments and powwows.

As residents in Florida continue to recover from the devastating Hurricane called Ian and with tribal lands in Florida largely spared from the wrath of Ian, the Miccosukee Tribal Police have joined the search-and-rescue efforts along the western coastline of the state. The Seminole Tribe of Florida reported no damage, though the tribe’s Hard Rock Casino Resorts in Tampa and Orlando closed during the storm. The Miccosukee Tribe likewise reported no significant damage.

Stephen Yellow Hawk President of the Black Hills Pow wow Board told KIPI news that the board is so excited to be having this year’s wacipi in the new Summit Arena @ the Monument this year. He says Better seating, and more floor space in the new arena will make the annual Black Hills Pow wow that begins this Friday memorable.
