More than 1,000 rural Alaskans in five communities along the Yukon River will receive affordable, high-speed internet for the first time thanks to a tribal broadband grant funded by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The transformative project will give rural residents access to virtual meetings, online classes, telehealth, and online jobs without having to leave their village or way of life.

The massive bill recently passed by congressional democrats includes hundreds of millions of dollars in climate and energy investments for Indian Country. The Inflation Reduction Act authorizes nearly 300 million dollars in new funding to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The money would go toward climate resiliency efforts, fish hatcheries and drought mitigation programs in Native communities. The 755-page bill also authorizes $150 million for a new program that will bring more electricity to homes in Indian Country, as well as modernize existing systems by making them more climate friendly.
