Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves
“Red vs. Blue”
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves Boys Basketball opened their 2023-2024 season with a scrimmage fundraiser Friday December 1st at the C-EB High School Gymnasium. Proceeds send both boys and girls basketball teams to a Division 1 camp in the upcoming off-season. Galen Eberhard is starting his second year as Head Coach of Braves Basketball. Coach Eberhard took advantage of the off-season with summer workouts and Braves’ fans are excited to see the results of their hardwork.
Senior Power Forward Braxton Kennedy is one of several Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves that was a regular in the off-season workouts. Brax showed great improvement in Friday’s Scrimmage game with upgrades in his confidence and scoring ability.
Sophomore Point Guard Levi Elk Nation is definitely the kind of athlete that you want to keep an eye on. Along with fellow Braves’ Shooting Guards Dayson Kennedy and Austin Johnson, Levi had a great football season for the Braves as they were one win away from the All-Nations Football Conference State Championship Game. The entire sophomore class from Cheyenne-Eagle Butte is very experienced on the Varsity level returning two of last year’s top 3pt. shooters in Nehemiah Veaux and Damien Clown.
Power Forwards Easton Lawrence and Danah Diver will both be advantages for the Braves in the paint, and with Levi Elk Nation running the point, the Braves look ready to make a run this year.
This year’s assistants are Coach Beau Kingfisher and Coach Harlee Neigel.
The Lady Braves are returning multiple starters from last year’s Varsity team. Head Coach Josh Malosh begins his 2nd year since taking over in 2021-2022, and Coach is looking to ramp up their defensive power this season. Senior Point Guard Mariah Buffalo-Halfred showed improvement on both sides of the ball picking up multiple steals and buckets early in the scrimmage. Scorers Makya Veaux and Tiana Johnson also return this year and the Lady Braves will have help from their talented group of underclassmen that includes Suni Bowman and Tommi Chasing Hawk.
The Braves and Lady Braves will be representing Cheyenne River at the 46th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational beginning Wednesday December 13 at the Monument in Rapid City.
