Minnesota sports betting backers plan bill changes to give racetracks a slice of the revenue. Minnesota’s horse racing industry would get a slice of the state’s sports betting revenue under a planned amendment aimed at increasing the proposal’s odds of passage. DFL Senator Matt Klein, the sponsor of the sports betting legislation, says he’s planning to introduce changes to the bill during a Senate hearing this week. A draft proposal unveiled in February would also give Native American tribes exclusive rights to licenses needed to operate both brick-and-mortar and mobile betting.
What would a ‘1,000-year drought’ mean for Native Americans? Water in the western United States is at a dangerously low level, and the electricity supply for 40 million people could be at risk. It is all because of the region’s worst drought in more than 1,000 years. This summer, the US government is set to make some big decisions on who gets rights to the little water that remains – the states of the Colorado River basin and tribal nations. Many Native tribes have never shared the same rights as the states, and many reservations lack sufficient running water. Now, tribes are trying to change that, but they are afraid they may be left behind again. Tribal members worry that trees, wildlife and river flows will be further diminished due to climate change and the historical use by the federal government of dams.
