Nadine Rose Bagola was born September 15, 1954, at Old Cheyenne Agency SD, to Nathan and Caroline Mae (Eye) Bagola. Her Lakota name is “Tokiyan Tunpi Win”, First Born Woman. Nadine had a happy childhood, being the first grandchild for her grandparents Sampson and Annie Eye. She was raised around her grandparents and her aunt Grace. She went to Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School, graduating in 1973. Nadine continued her education at Northern State University and Si Tanka/Oglala Lakota College. She graduated college in 2003 with her Associates Degree in Education.
In 1974, Nadine married Gilbert Agneaux; to this union, they had five children: Arlene (Jake) Red Bear, Quentin “KC” Agneaux, Marilyn (Danny) Salter, Cherie Agneaux and Denaye (Renatta Agneau and Devon Davis). They lived in several places and worked at many places, then finally returned home to Cheyenne River. In 1998, Nadine and John Fisherman got married. In their union, they brought a baby boy into the world that passed soon after.
Nadine loved teaching and being around kids. Her first job was as a high school clerk for the C-EB school and was a long-time teacher at Cheyenne River Head Start. She was always happy to see her students grow up. She liked helping parents enroll their children into school and travelled throughout the reservation to help numerous people. In 2017, she retired after 20+ years of service as a teacher and Family Services worker. At this time, she was gifted her Lakota name. During her duration of services, she gained many friends from her co-workers and fellow teachers.
Nadine raised her grandchildren: Storme Agneaux, Natelie and Dylan Mound, and a niece Megan Cuka (Bagola), as her own at her home in Bear Creek, SD. Her house was always a happy and loving home, always welcoming nieces and nephews. She was never seen alone because her grandchildren were always with her. She loved spoiling everyone and having them close by. She hosted many “slumber parties”, nights sleeping on the trampoline outside. She helped design and sew Powwow Regalia for her youngest daughter, oldest grandchild and niece. During the summer, she’d take them to Powwow’s in the communities of Cheyenne River.
Nadine’s favorite pastimes were drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, listening to her country music and taking drives to rummage sales. She collected pens from all the local businesses she’d go to. She enjoyed buying beaded jewelry, collecting change to give to her grandchildren, doing crossword puzzles, reading magazines and books, sewing, making playdoh at home for her students and planting flowers outside in the yard. In her home, she had her own “jungle” of plants that her grandchildren helped care for. She always had a love for small dogs, especially Angel.
Nadine is survived by her children: Arlene (Jake) Red Bear, Dickinson, ND, Quentin “KC” Agneaux, Eagle Butte, SD, and Denaye (Renatta Agneau and Devon Davis) Agneau, Newtown, ND; siblings: Deloris and Dale (Arlys) Bagola, Eagle Butte SD; aunts: Grace Larrabee, Eagle Butte SD, Eva Jost of Citrus Heights, California, Donna Martel, Mobridge, SD; many nieces and nephews; grandchildren: Ashley (Seth) Poland, Ashten Iron Moccasin, Aubree (Dual Keck) Iron Moccasin, A’Ryan (Kiah Hall) Ganje, Rhondee Ganje, Jessica (Budda), Storme, Jade and Gavin, Kaylee, Kayson Agneaux, Jasmine, Eryn and Xavier Louis, Elijah Salter, Natelie (Laurice) and Dylan Mound, and Aria Morning Star-Agneau-Davis; great-grandchildren: Adelynn and Anthony Poland, Ausha Vernoche, Arius Hall, Drayton, Jeryn, and Gia Eagle Feather, Lillian Chavez, Sakoiya Agneaux, Esmae Rice and Kellan Louis.
